Sorby, Henry Clifton
(10 may. 1826, Woodbourne, cerca de Sheffield, Yorkshire, Inglaterra–9 mar. 1908, Sheffield).

Científico aficionado británico. Convencido del valor del microscopio para la geología, empezó en 1849 a preparar secciones delgadas de rocas, de más o menos 0,025 mm (0,001 pulg.) de espesor, para el estudio al microscopio. Desarrolló un nuevo tipo de microscopio espectral para analizar la luz de pigmentos orgánicos (1865). Su investigación sobre meteoros condujo a estudios del hierro y del acero, y sus estudios posteriores abarcaron el origen de las rocas estratificadas, la meteorización y la biología marina. Publicó trabajos que tratan de la geografía física de los períodos geológicos, de la desintegración y formación de las rocas y de las terrazas fluviales. Es considerado el padre de la petrografía y metalografía microscópicas.
